Punta Venado Reef
Greater than 30m maximum depth
Maximum depth: 25-30m/82-98ft along the sloping wall, 40m at the edge of the cantil.
Weak-to-average current. Good visibility, often exceeding 30m/100ft.
As with Islote, there is a profusion of coral and sponges... but even more so.
Its variety and health amaze many divers who regularly visit our shores.
If we are taking out more experienced divers we try making a quick foray to the cantil so that our clients can get a feel for the great depths beyond the 90º angle edge it forms for quite a long stretch.
Great hammerheads, bull sharks and sailfish have been spotted in the blue, cruising over the abyss but the most amazing sights are the large schools of Oceanic Triggerfish that gather along the 20-25m/65-82ft mark.
Sizeable jacks swim up and down this beautiful reef and in season the rarely visited shallower stretch (10-12m/33-39ft) shelters many hogfish and quite a number of black grouper.
A demanding dive that requires good buoyancy due to the lack of reference points along the flatter shallow side to guide the diver during the mandatory safety stop.
